Couldn’t see if her condition was worsening. He couldn’t see if she was there, alive, getting better. When they took her away, his blood ran cold. In the ambulance she had been right there in front of him. It was a whirlwind at the hospital, even worse than the ambulance. Marcus held her hand the whole way, running his thumb over his knuckles anxiously. The paramedics in the back of the ambulance were taking her vitals, checking for further injury, anything they could tell the emergency department when they arrived. Marcus barely registered the ride to the hospital, focussed solely on the woman on the gurney. Marcus was so often the cool headed one of The Heroics, leading with poise. The man jumped, startled at Marcus’ firm demand. Moreno-” The paramedic started speaking to him, but he ignored him, climbing into the back of the ambulance and not letting the woman go until she was on the gurney in the back. He ran as hard as he could towards the nearest ambulance. As soon as he was happy with her position, he ran. He arranged her carefully, resting her head against his shoulder to avoid jostling her neck any more than necessary. No longer willing to wait for help to come to him, Marcus scooped her up in his arms. He didn’t know anything about her, her name, her age, nothing except that she needed medical attention right away. The relief was gone as he registered that his soulmate was laying here unconscious. A mark that Marcus was intimately familiar with as the location and shape matched his own perfectly. There, on her inner bicep, was her soulmark. Less worried about finding a pulse, Marcus let his gaze trail back up over her arm to her face, but he stopped short. He struggled for a moment to find the right location before he felt the woman’s light, feathery pulse. He took her wrist in his hand, trying to find a pulse. He shouted over his shoulder for a medic, hoping they could help her. She didn’t respond, making his heart clench. Marcus rushed to her side, giving her shoulder a soft pat to see if he could rouse her. She had been hidden by the car, covered in dust from the fight. Marcus let his arms down, ready to move to the next vehicle that had to be righted, only something caught his eye: A woman was lying on the sidewalk. Pieces of the car grinding and popping against itself as it shifted.įinally, Marcus’ powers won the tug of war, the car moving away from the building and settling upright on the street. The metal groaned as it started to respond to his powers. Marcus allowed himself a moment, a few deep breaths, before extending his arms. They were still heavy, and it took a lot of concentration, but he could do it easier than most.Ī yellow car was askew on the sidewalk, half propped up against the building it had collided with. Marcus was using his powers over metal to help get them righted and back on the streets. Cars either parked or abandoned as people fled on foot. The explosions during the battle had overturned several cars that had been on the street. What good was saving the city if they left it in ruins? Helping to locate civilians who had gotten caught in the crossfire, triaging the injured and getting them to the paramedics, cleaning up the rubble and debris. Aiding the clean-up of the city was important to Marcus Moreno and as the leader of The Heroics, he made it important to the rest of them. The dust had settled over the crumbled streets, but The Heroics’ job wasn’t yet over. A full fledged battle waged in the streets barely an hour before. The city was eerily quiet compared to the chaos it had been 30 minutes ago.
